Ljudevit Slamnik (1827. – 1908.), vjeroučitelj i ravnatelj nekadašnje Cesarsko-kraljevske višegimnazije u Rijeci prijateljevao je s Franjom Račkim (1828. – 1894.), kanonikom, političarom, saborskim zastupnikom, zagovarateljem južnoslavenske politike i prvim predsjednikomtada Jugoslavenske (danas Hrvatske) akademije znanosti i umjetnosti. O njihovu odnosu itadašnjim prilikama svjedoči nam sadržaj četrnaest pisama koje je Slamnik uputio Račkomeod konca 1863. do sredine 1877. godine. Pisma su pohranjena u Arhivu HAZU-a, u fondu“Ostavština Franje Račkog”. Među inim temama, raspravljali su o obiteljskim, prosvjetnim,političkim i nakladničkim prilikama, te nam rasvjetlili niz dosad nepoznatih momenata.
