Rescue Excavation at Hallsworth Road, Eccles

Abstract

An archaeological evaluation was carried out in June 2022 with the excavation of 6 evaluation trenches that identified the moat of Barton Old Hall, whilst in the northern part of the site were the remains of a Second World War air-raid shelter. This evaluation concluded that the site had potential to contain buried archaeological remains of sufficient research interest to warrant more detailed investigation. An openarea excavation and historic building investigation was undertaken to fully understand the survival and extent of the archaeological resource in advance of development. The earliest human activity was represented by the northern circuit of a penannular moat surrounding Barton Old Hall associated with features such as ditches, a trackway and furrows that were dated to the late medieval and post-medieval period. Features pertaining to the late medieval and post medieval activity were exposed only in the southern part of the site (Area 1). Smaller open area investigations in the western and northern parts of the site were targeted on a potential buried land surface (Area 3) and wartime air-raid shelter (Area 2).
