In response to a condition on the planning permission for a new car park and access road at Heartwood Forest, Sandridge, Herts. The Heritage Network was commissioned by The Woodland Trust to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks. Geophysical survey across the area had indicated potential for activity of archaeological significance and subsequent trial trenching in the vicinity of the present site had revealed prehistoric and Roman features and finds. On the basis of the results of the geophysical survey and the evaluation, the St Albans District Archaeologist requested the archaeological monitoring of the present project. Despite the known potential of the area, no features, deposits or finds of archaeological significance were present. Modern plough marks were observed at the northern end of the site.
