In order to advise the planning authority regarding the archaeological potential of a proposed development site on land at The Pound, Upper Caldecote, Bedfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a field evaluation and trial trenching. The site is a rectangular arable field, occupying the north west quadrant of the junction between Ickwell Road and Vinegar Hill, centred on NGR TL 16466 45963.The historic core of the village is situated 300m to the south east of the site, and the 19th century Grade II listed parish church of All Saints lies 150m to the east. Seven trial trenches were subsequently excavated across the site revealing a number of features, including ditches and pits, which were recorded and photographed. Where featuresproduced dateable artefacts, they demonstrated activity on the site between the Late Bronze age - Early Iron Age. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risk that the proposed development might have a negative impact on remains of archaeological significance may be considered to be High for the Bronze age - Iron Age period, Moderate for the medieval and Low for all other periods.
