Toost Wood Barn comprises an isolated structure, situated at 172m above Ordnance Datum on a south facing slope to the south of School Road, and approximately 700m west of Hassop, at National Grid Reference: SK 23147 72141. The barn comprises an early-19th century field barn, dating to a period when such buildings were already widespread within the region. Field barns comprise small, often isolated buildings, situated to enable land and stock to be managed remotely from the main farm, and are often associated with the enclosure of the landscape. The fabric of the barn preserves evidence of several phases of alteration which indicate a change in use in the late-19th to early-20th century before being returned to a field barn in the mid-20th century. The building was simply built and furnished as befit its use, with design and architecture of the building is typical of its period and location. The surviving fixtures and fittings are all of mid-20th century date. Overall, whilst it is considered that Toost Wood Barn lacks the degree of survival or architectural/historical interest to be considered of regional or higher heritage significance, the building possesses a local level of significance in relation to its form, materials and age which contributes positively towards the character of the surrounding historic landscape.
