This Heritage Statement considers the likely impact on the historic environment of a proposed new dwelling on land to the rear of Mill Cottage, Halford. It aims to established the potential impact of the proposal on the significance of any nearby heritage asset and on any archaeological remains that might be present within the site. The proposal site comprises part of the rear garden of Mill Cottage; an area of former paddocks on the edge of recorded settlement as identified on the early Ordnance Survey maps (1887). The potential to encounter buried archaeological remains associated with medieval settlement to exist here is assessed as being moderate and if present would be in a moderate to good state of preservation. The statement finds that there will be no direct impact on any listed buildings, but that there potential for direct impact on the Conservation Area. The site is also within 15m of the rear wall of the Grade II listed Halford Bridge Inn; a turnpike era coaching inn. The small scale and height of the new dwelling and location behind the less important rear service buildings of the inn mean that the impact of this proposal on the setting of the inn will be no greater than negligible and within the range of less than substantial harm.
