Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by E.ON UK Renewables Ltd. to undertake archaeological monitoring during site investigation works at a former industrial site on Staithes Road, Saltend, near Kingston upon Hull, approximately centred on National Grid Reference 429300 51700. This report presents a brief description of the methodology followed, the results of the monitoring, and an interpretation of the findings. The excavation of 10 inspection pits was monitored within the site. Each pit was hand excavated to a depth of between 0.6-1m and a diameter no greater then 0.5m. The pits were excavated to investigate the depth of the made ground and in advance of cable percussive boreholes The site is largely made up of modern made-ground comprising fragments of brick, ceramic waste and gravels with a series of modern concrete raft foundations evident to the south of the area. Ground levels within the monitored area appeared to have been truncated down to the natural geology, with an area of redeposited material to the north of the site. Archaeological monitoring during the ground inspection works did not identify any evidence of human activity prior to the modern period. The extent of the disturbance and ground levelling could not be ascertained, however the level of disturbance is likely to date to the mid-late 20th century when industrial developments from the south expanded into the site. There is a possibility that deeply cut archaeological features could survive within areas of truncation.
