A possible Late Upper Palaeolithic site at Cranwich, Norfolk

Abstract

Two tanged flint flakes best paralleled on the opposite side of the N Sea suggest the possibility of an occupation site of Zone II-III in this neighbourhood. Two backed blades found separately would also fit such a context. A very few sites in S England, notably Hengistbury Head, produce similar artefacts, and a scatter is known in E Anglia of possibly Late Upper Palaeolithic tools. Caution is needed, since tanged flints can be Mesolithic.
