Hellespontos (Çanakkale Boğazı) girişinde, Troya sahili açıklarında yer alan Tenedos Adası, Marmara(Propontis) üzerinden Karadeniz’e (Pontus Euksinos) ulaşmak isteyen ticari gemilerin güvenli geçişi için gereklirüzgâr şartları oluşuncaya kadar konaklayabilecekleri limanlara sahip olmasından dolayı MÖ VIII ve VII.yüzyıllarda denizel ticaret ağları yanı sıra kültürel etkileşim için de önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Bu açıdan, Tenedosnekropolisi mezar buluntuları adanın MÖ VIII. ve VII. yüzyıllarda ulaştığı gelişmiş kültürel refah düzeyine tanıklıkyapmaktadır. Bu çalışma, Tenedos nekropolis alanında yapılan kazılarda daha çok MÖ VIII. yüzyıl mezarlarındaele geçmiş bir gurup seramik askos’u tipoloji, işlev ve kültürel etkileşim açısından tanıtır. İrdelenen 10 askosörneğinden 7 adeti kuş biçimli, geriye kalan üç adet ise halka biçimli kategorisinde değerlendirilir. Söz konususeramik askos’ların ölü gömme geleneğinin bir parçası olarak özellikle mezarlar için üretilmiş olabileceğidüşünülmektedir. Ögelerin sadece mezarlarda ele geçmesi bu tür seramik askos’ların yerel ölü gömmeritüelinin bir parçası olduklarına işaret eder. Tenedoslu ustaların üretimi olması muhtemel askos’lar, tipolojikaçıdan Kıbrıs ve Fenike örnekleriyle yakın benzerlikler sergiler.

Located on the mouth of the Hellespontus (Dardanelles Strait) just offshore of Troy’s coastline,Tenedos played a major role in the cultural interactions and maritime network of trade during the VIIIth andVIIth centuries, due to its harbors that provided shelter for the ships before they made their ways to thePropontis and into the Pontus Euxinus when the wind and current conditions permitted a safe passage. Theeighth and seventh century BC graves of the necropolis of Tenedus attest to the wealth of Tenedus duringthese centuries. This work in this context examines a small assemblage of pottery askoi derived mainly fromthe eight century BC graves at the necropolis of Tenedus in terms of typology, function, and culturalinteractions. Among these ten pottery askoi, seven examples are bird-shaped, while the remaining three areof the ring-shaped category. It is postulated in this work that these pottery askoi may have been manufacturedspecifically for mortuary purpose. Their depositions in graves may have been related to their use in funeraryrituals. These askoi, most likely produced by local Tenedian potters, are reminiscent of Cypriote andPhoenician examples in terms of typology.
