</script>The use of containers for seedling production is recommended for all crops except those which cannot be transplanted e.g. carrot. The shape of the container has a profound effect on the root system of the seedling and the resultant plant. A system of cellular flats is widely gaining acceptance and the large variety of sizes and shapes should allow for any type of seedling to be grown. Water and nutrient requirements are critical due to the rapid growth of the seedling and also the small volume of medium. The medium texture and general properties is important and any untested medium should be tried out on a small scale first. Pest and diseases should not be a problem provided basic steps in sanitation are observed. Use of chemical sprays should only be necessary in the event of an actual outbreak. Automation or mechanical aid of many facets is possible and desirable. These factors are primarily irrigation and nutrition, tray-filling and seeding and media mixing. Good nursery practices are still required, in most cases with few modifications.
