Western Atlantic— USA (North Carolina to Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Pará, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina) (Provenzano 1959; Williams 1984; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Rieger & Giraldi 1997; Mantelatto & Souza-Carey 1998; Rieger 1998; Melo 1999; Strasser & Price 1999; Coelho et al. 2007; Alves et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009; Fransozo et al. 2011). Remarks. Paguristes tortugae is a species complex (McLaughlin & Provenzano, 1974). Preliminary molecular analysis carried out by one of us (FLM) revealed some inconsistencies in the phylogenetic position of the Brazilian individuals when compared with some western congeners, suggesting that further study of the genus is required. Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB 1251—16S (DQ369933) (Mantelatto et al. 2006), CCDB 1141— COI (MT785554).
