A recent study indicated genetic structure among populations of C. ornatus and signs that the Amazon-Orinoco plume represents a osmotic barrier, with the presence of two evolutionary units that should be investigated regarding the taxonomic status (Peres & Mantelatto 2020). Sequences accession number (GenBank): ULLZ 4178—16S (AJ298186) (Schubart et al. 2001), ULLZ 4178—COI (MF490074) (Mantelatto et al. 2018a).
