Abstract

Atendendo a realidade normativa nacional para racionalizar o uso medicinal de especies vegetais, tanto pela medicina tradicional como para producao e comercializacao de fitoterapicos, este trabalho objetivou compilar informacoes cientificas a respeito do genero Cochlospermum Kunth enfatizando a especie C. regium (Mart. et. Schr.) Pilger, nativa do cerrado brasileiro e utilizada para tratar doencas relacionadas com inflamacao e infeccao. Este genero e constituido por 11 especies que se desenvolvem em paises tropicais sendo cinco com maior indicacao medicinal (C. regium, C. tinctorium, C. vitifolium, C. angolense e C. planchonni). Dentre essas, C. regium (algodaozinho) possui maior abrangencia de investigacoes cientificas envolvendo aspectos botânicos, fenologicos, agronomicos, farmacologicos, toxicologicos, quimicos e farmacognosticos. As informacoes aqui compiladas podem facilitar e direcionar futuras pesquisas sobre o genero alem de subsidiar o emprego racional de C. regium na fitoterapia brasileira.
