Abstract

El artículo se enmarca en el dinámico debate sobre la esclavitud y la economía del rescate de cautivos en el Mediterráneo de la época moderna, y analiza la actividad redentora protagonizada por los frailes de la Orden de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, su labor de rescate de cautivos y la financiación y desarrollo de las misiones de redención en la larga duración (un siglo y medio aproximadamente). El ensayo se centra, en particular, en el estudio de cuatro misiones de redenciones (1575, 1612, 1678 y 1723) a través del análisis de los respectivos libros de cuentas, donde un notario real registraba todo movimiento de dinero, tanto de ingresos como de gastos, con el fin de permitir la trazabilidad y de tener bajo control la contabilidad de la actividad de rescate llevada a cabo por los religiosos. Como se verá, era la propia Monarquía hispánica que decidía a quiénes rescatar prioritariamente, y cuánto dinero emplear en ello, lo que limitaba mucho la libertad de acción de los religiosos redentores.
