La afirmación de la libertad en el pensamiento de Duns Escoto

Abstract

En este artículo se explora el pensamiento de Duns Escoto sobre la libertad, para extraer algunos elementos que puedan servir a un estudio sistemático de la misma. Partiendo de la distinción entre natural y libre, se propone mostrar lo que es para el autor más específico de la libertad. Algo que, por tratarse de una perfección pura, se puede aplicar por igual a Dios y a las criaturas libres. Tras exponer el contenido y origen de la distinción, el artículo describe el pensamiento del franciscano sobre la libertad divina. Esta, en cuanto es infinita, es compatible con la necesidad; a la vez, en cuanto creadora, es capaz de un obrar contingente. En tercer lugar, se estudia la libertad humana, que es parte importante de la imagen de Dios en el hombre. La concepción escotista permite superar la idea de que la libertad depende de la imperfección del mundo contingente o de la imperfección del conocimiento que tenemos de él. Más bien, muestra que la libertad posee un acto propio, y, así, es algo más que un mero “corolario” del conocimiento.
