El presente artículo evalúa y facilita el conocimiento de Frente al lienzo (1924) del escritor, caricaturista y artista plástico José Román (1871-1957), un precoz ensayo que hasta el momento ha sido poco analizado por la historiografía, singular ejemplo dentro de la incipiente literatura cinematográfica española. Con el objetivo de poner en valor su carácter original, precursor y propedéutico, se han examinado las principales preocupaciones y debates que se dan cita en el texto, seleccionando pasajes claves y estableciendo relaciones con escritos contemporáneos e inmediatamente posteriores.
