Walking as a mode in daily mobility patterns

Abstract

Walking is used surprisingly often in spite of the low speed it offers. To understand this paradox, we analyze how it fits within daily mobility patterns through the lens of multimodal practices, using the Parisian region transport survey (EGT) of 2010. More specifically, we focus on the articulation over distinct trips over the course of a day between walking and other transportation modes. Thus we isolate two very different behaviors : i) the combination of walking and public transports, associated with trip chains containing both modes, mainly carried out by working populations visiting dense areas; ii) the use of both walking and the car, in which each mode is in a specific trip chain, practiced by non-working individuals living in the suburbs. Performing at least one trip on foot over the course of a day does not have the same meaning in these two cases. In the first one, it is a way of accessing rapidly resources close by and thus of being able to insert non-work activities in a tight schedule, in the second one it is associated with leisure destinations and the logic behind this mode choice is rather one of pleasure. Thus the use of walking to get around does not obey a unique logic: far from being simply an indicator of a more relaxed lifestyle, it can be a highly effective way to carry out daily activity schedules. La marche interpelle par la fréquence de sa pratique en dépit de sa relative lenteur. Afin de comprendre ce paradoxe, son inscription dans les schémas de mobilité quotidiens est analysée par le biais des pratiques de multimodalité à l’aide de l’Enquête Globale Transport de 2010. En particulier, nous nous centrons sur les articulations d’un déplacement à l’autre au cours d’une journée entre la marche et les modes mécanisés. On observe ainsi deux grands types de comportements : d’une part celui combinant la marche et les transports en commun, qui implique des boucles de déplacements contenant les deux et qui est principalement pratiqué par des populations actives fréquentant les zones denses ; et d’autre part une articulation entre marche et voiture impliquant un grand nombre de retours au domicile et pratiquée par des personnes inactives fréquentant la banlieue. L’insertion de la marche au sein des programmes d’activité des individus n’a pas le même sens dans ces deux cas. Dans le premier, c’est un moyen de répondre à un emploi du temps contraint en densifiant par des destinations de proximité une journée dominée par le travail, tandis que dans l’autre il s’agit d’une pratique d’agrément, associée à une forte consommation de loisirs. Ainsi le sens donné à la marche n’est pas univoque : loin d’être un pis-aller ou un mode ludique, la marche peut être un mode efficace et nécessaire pour mener à bien nos programmes d’activités quotidiens.
