In this editorial survey we introduce the special issue of the journal Communications in Mathematics on the topic in the title of the article. Our main goal is to briefly outline some of the main aspects of this important area at the intersection of theory and applications, providing the context for the articles showcased in this special issue.
FOS: Computer and information sciences, cryptography, Mathematics - Number Theory, Computer Science - Information Theory, Information Theory (cs.IT), ta111, Applications of the theory of convex sets and geometry of numbers (covering radius, etc.) to coding theory, Algebraic coding theory; cryptography (number-theoretic aspects), Metric Geometry (math.MG), quadratic forms, Mathematics - Metric Geometry, 11HXX, 11EXX, 52CXX, 11J25, 11P21, 11T71, 94A60, 94B75, Diophantine inequalities, Lattice points in specified regions, lattices, sphere packing, Lattices and convex bodies (number-theoretic aspects), Cryptography, FOS: Mathematics, Number Theory (math.NT), coding theory, Diophantine approximations, geometry of numbers

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 0 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Average | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
