Corsari genovesi nel Mediterraneo intorno alla quarta crociata

Abstract

Entre le XIIe et XIIIe siècle, les chroniques font souvent référence à corsaires génois actifs dans la Méditerranée centrale et orientale. Grâce à leurs capacités diplomatiques et militaires, ils parviennent à s'insérer dans les jeux de pouvoir en Italie du Sud, en obtenant charges dans l'amirauté et même territoires, comme dans les cas de Syracuse ou de Malte. Dans le contexte byzantin, les événements de la Quatrième Croisade obligent les Génois à jouer en décalage, en essayant des coups de main à Crète et Corfou qui s'avouent un échec sur la durée de quelques années. En considérant les différentes sources de l'époque, l'article s'interroge sur le rôle joué par ces personnages à niveau international, en soulignant comme, à bien des égards, leurs actions ne constituent pas une exception dans la société génoise sur la longue durée.
