<div class="htmlview paragraph">Hypergolic combustion was experimentally investigated in a reciprocating internal combustion engine by means of preheating the fuel to about 1000°F (550°C) prior to direct cylinder injection. Ignition delay, exhaust opacity, and the rate of heat release were measured, and the potential for improved engine performance was demonstrated.</div>
