<div class="htmlview paragraph">Combustion chamber insulation techniques are being developed to improve the thermal efficiency of the internal combustion engine. Strain isolated ceramic coating systems are being evaluated to apply ceramic thermal barriers to metal engine components. A thorough understanding of the engine environment and the response of the coating system to that environment is needed to design durable coatings for engine use.</div>
