Infiltration rate with respect to rainfall energy was determined on a Sceptre clay, Haverhill loam and Hatton fine sandy loam. The infiltration rate of saturated Sceptre clay dropped from 24.0 to 0.6 cm per hour with an application of 2.0 cm of simulated rain. The infiltration rate of saturated Haverhill loam dropped from 4.0 to 0.6, and that of Hatton sandy loam from 14.5 to 9.5 cm per hour. Raindrop energy was from a 4.6-mm diameter drop tailing through a 6.55-m height. To maintain a high level of infiltration, surface soil must be protected from rainfall energy.
