A chemostratigraphic characterization of Newmarket Till in drill core from north of Lake Ontario

Abstract

The Newmarket Till (NT) covers much of the south-central Ontario forming a regional stratigraphic marker. Geochemical analysis was performed using aqua regia, four-acid, and flux-fusion digestion on 137 samples of NT collected from 8 boreholes across two regional transects to quantify potential geochemical variations through the till. The geochemistry of the <63 ?m size fraction exhibits strong elemental correlations between major and trace element contents and CaO. All major elements exhibit negative correlations with CaO contents indicative of the incorporation of Paleozoic carbonates flooring the southern Ontario Basin. A chemical ratio of CaO+MgO/SiO2+Al2O3 (Provenance Indicator) suggest significant quantities of material from the Paleozoic carbonates were incorporated into the till matrix as ice moved south of the Canadian Shield. High precision sampling using portable XRF methods for a continuous sediment core located near Pickering Ontario, allowed for the identification of 4 geochemical subfacies unidentifiable on the macro scale along with 3 interbeds. These geochemical subunits in the NT cannot be traced to nearby boreholes and hence do not have regional extent.
