LANDSAT Thematic Mapper (TM) data can be used to map altered rocks given the right geological environment. This paper briefly reviews spectral reflectance theory as it applies to the detection of different minerals and presents an example of how this theory can be applied to LANDSAT TM data. The example is from a Cu-Au porphyry system, the Sulphurets area, located northwest of Stewart, British Columbia. The example illustrates the application of LANDSAT TM data in mapping rocks that have undergone alteration, primarily iron oxidation and clay alteration.
