Abstract

Paratodus benedeni (Lamnidae, Condrichthyes) is recorded by first time in upper Miocene (Tortonian) and lower Pliocene deposits of El Torcal (Antequera) and El Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadiz) (Southern Spain), respectively. For Upper Miocene several marine basins contains warm temperate coastal reefs. The fossil record consits of one very well preserved tooth of El Torcal (Antequera) and two big teeth very well preserved of El Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadiz) (lower Pliocene). Paratodus benedeni is an extinct shark that inhabited seas over the world since Oligocene to Pliocene, rare in Spanish Neogene basins.
