Abstract

A partir de l’exemple de Kleist l’auteur essaie de dégager une forme littéraire spécifiquement allemande de la peur qui repose sur l’incapacité à reconnaître l’ordre du monde, sur le danger toujours latent de percevoir le chaos. Les héros de Kleist s’interrogent sur l’existence d’une loi des phénomènes, d’un sens universel. Le divorce de l’homme et d’un monde dont il ne parvient pas à percevoir les lois suscite de Goethe à Thomas Mann une qualité spécifique de peur qui débouche sur le cri du théâtre expressionniste. Le thème de la peur dans la littérature russe, en dépit de tous les points de convergence entre les deux espaces culturels renvoie à la vie intérieure des héros. Sa source ne réside pas dans la constatation d’une insuffisance de l’ordre du monde mais dans les déchirements de la conscience. L’article rapproche en outre la peur littéraire d’une expérience historique qui conduit l’Allemagne à redouter le désordre là où la Russie redoute les ordres contraignants.
