Abstract

Les discussions entre élèves, à l’école primaire, peuvent-elles être considérées comme philosophiques ? L’enfant peut-il accéder à la philosophie ? Selon l’auteur, les discussions dites « à visée philosophique » préparent à la philosophie, mais ne sont pas à proprement parler philosophiques ; elles contribuent, en liaison avec les débats interprétatifs et les débats de vie de classe, à la formation de la personne et du citoyen par l’exercice de la pensée réfléchie. Les enfants pensent, mais on ne peut pas appeler « philosophie » tout éveil à la pensée réfléchie. L’auteur lève la confusion, souvent faite, entre pensée et philosophie en montrant qu’il y a de la pensée (au sens fort de pensée capable de vérité) dans les sciences, les arts, la littérature, la politique. La philosophie se caractérisant par une visée de totalisation, de systématicité et de radicalité, l’enfant n’a ni les concepts ni la culture ni l’expérience humaine lui permettant d’entrer dans la philosophie. C’est avec l’adolescence qu’un seuil est franchi qui rend possible l’apprentissage de la philosophie. Quel travail de la pensée est à l’œuvre dans les discussions à l’école primaire ? L’auteur considère que ces discussions sont des dispositifs d’apprentissage de la réflexion selon les trois maximes kantiennes du sens commun : penser par soi-même (dépasser les opinions immédiates), penser en se mettant à la place d’autrui (élargir son point de vue), penser en accord avec soi-même (raisonner de façon conséquente). Ces discussions doivent se situer dans le cadre constructif de l’éducation morale et civique.
