Les élites rurales byzantines

Abstract

La bibliographie byzantine est très réservée sur l’usage du terme élites au sommet de la pyramide sociale, préférant parler d’aristocratie. Mais, depuis les années 1970, elle s’est attachée à étudier la hiérarchie sociale à l’intérieur des sociétés villageoises et donc à définir ceux qui y occupaient une position plus élevée que les autres, en lien ou non avec l’aristocratie et la puissance étatique. Ces études sont devenues plus fréquentes dans les vingt dernières années et nous avons tenté d’en faire ressortir l’apport. Puis nous avons tenté de définir les sources disponibles pour cette étude, d’abord juridiques et hagiographiques durant la période comprise entre la perte de l’Égypte, où les papyrus permettent d’aborder la question, et les premiers documents d’archives conservés, à partir du début du Xe siècle. Nous avons tiré de ces sources un certain nombre d’exemples permettant de dresser un portrait général, au reste peu précis en l’état actuel des recherches, des élites rurales byzantines.
