Les élites rurales byzantines

Abstract

La bibliographie byzantine est tres reservee sur l’usage du terme elites au sommet de la pyramide sociale, preferant parler d’aristocratie. Mais, depuis les annees 1970, elle s’est attachee a etudier la hierarchie sociale a l’interieur des societes villageoises et donc a definir ceux qui y occupaient une position plus elevee que les autres, en lien ou non avec l’aristocratie et la puissance etatique. Ces etudes sont devenues plus frequentes dans les vingt dernieres annees et nous avons tente d’en faire ressortir l’apport. Puis nous avons tente de definir les sources disponibles pour cette etude, d’abord juridiques et hagiographiques durant la periode comprise entre la perte de l’Egypte, ou les papyrus permettent d’aborder la question, et les premiers documents d’archives conserves, a partir du debut du Xe siecle. Nous avons tire de ces sources un certain nombre d’exemples permettant de dresser un portrait general, au reste peu precis en l’etat actuel des recherches, des elites rurales byzantines.
