Les fouilles archéologiques conduites dans la petite agglomération de Sagone, sur la côte sud-ouest de la Corse, ont permis la découverte d’un mausolée daté des années 430-450 environ. Plusieurs indices suggèrent que le corps du défunt qui y était inhumé a été transféré dans la basilique voisine, dont le presbyterium est réaménagé. Ce mausolée pourrait être celui d’Appien, saint titulaire de la basilique.
