Hypermémorisation et influence des traumas de guerre pendant l’enfance au travers de l’œuvre de James Graham Ballard

Abstract

L’hypermnésie traumatique est un sujet complexe qui a été abordé dans de nombreux ouvrages contemporains de fiction et de non-fiction. Les effets de la violence et de la guerre sur les enfants y sont parfois décrits. L’œuvre de James Graham Ballard (1930-2009) permet d’explorer l’impact de la mémoire traumatique pendant l’enfance au travers de son expérience durant son internement dans un camp de prisonniers en Chine pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ses écrits centrés sur la violence, l’isolement social et la technologie illustrent comment les traumatismes de l’enfance peuvent hanter les personnages de ses romans, à la fois confrontés à des situations extrêmes et en quête d’une paix intérieure, d’un sens de la vie. Ainsi, son œuvre ne peut se résumer à une vision sombre et dystopique du monde, de la même manière qu’on ne peut limiter les influences sur son travail littéraire à son expérience de captivité enfant. Son hypermnésie a sans doute aussi à voir avec un choix stylistique et une réflexion sur la manière dont les traumatismes peuvent affecter la mémoire et la perception de la réalité, notre identité.
