1915, ano queer; 1922, ano straight

Authors: Curopos, Fernando;

1915, ano queer; 1922, ano straight

Abstract

By comparing the representation of sexuality and desire between A Confissão de Lúcio (Mário de Sá-Carneiro, 1913) and Macunaíma (Mário de Andrade, 1928), considered here as two canonical works of Portuguese literary modernity and Brazilian, we can only notice the radical difference in the politico-sexual agenda that underlies them. By publishing his short story a year before the “Revolution of Orpheu”, Sá-Carneiro introduces, so to speak, a queer sensibility into Portuguese modernism, while Mário de Andrade’s novel is only an apology for heterosexuality, which stems from “the straight mind”.
