Abstract

La maitrise d’un geste technique, et de ce qu’il produit, predispose a l’admiration et a la valorisation esthetique tout observateur ignorant des regles presidant a sa realisation. L’ignorance ne fait meme qu’en accroitre l’intensite. Les femmes bwaba (Burkina Faso) entretenaient soigneusement le mystere entourant leur savoir-faire relatif a l’inscription sur la peau de complexes compositions graphiques. Savoir graver une image dans la matiere vivante des corps, savoir la composer puis la soigner de maniere a garantir le resultat, avoir le courage d’infliger des blessures douloureuses et d’etre confrontees aux risques d’infection constituaient quelques-unes de leurs competences, a la fois techniques et morales. Ces femmes jouissaient toutes d’une grande estime et certaines d’entre elles d’une renommee qui s’etendait bien au-dela de leur village. C’est seulement lorsque ces competences avaient ete demontrees que leur renommee s’installait, entrainant dans son sillage la reconnaissance de la singularite de leur œuvre. Certaines scarificatrices etaient alors considerees comme des auteurs possedant leur propre style, susceptible d’etre decrit en tant que tel.
