Abstract

Le programme éditorial conçu par Gustave Doré, en 1855, de chefs d’œuvre de la littérature illustrés de planches in-folio repose sur la mise au point de la technique de la gravure sur bois de teinte en collaboration avec des praticiens choisis. Le rôle de l’illustrateur a été déterminant dans l’avènement de cette seconde révolution de la gravure sur bois de bout, dont on décèle les prémices dès les années 1840 mais qui s’épanouit dans les années 1860 grâce à la virtuosité de graveurs comme Héliodore Pisan et François Pannemaker. Les effets de clair-obscur inhérents à la gravure de teinte, qui tente de rivaliser avec la taille-douce mais aussi avec la lithographie, contribuent à l’esthétique néo-romantique du Second Empire.
