Abstract

L’espace, dans The Unlimited Dream Company, est traité selon une approche surréaliste : les lieux vides et désolés de la vie moderne, telle que Ballard l’a expérimentée à Shepperton — paradigme de nulle part — sont remplis par un monde fabuleux. Au cœur des espaces urbains déshumanisés surgissent des forêts luxuriantes où Blake, le protagoniste, agit, à la croisée du rêve et de la réalité, de la vie et de la mort, de la lucidité et de l’hallucination. L’imagination est une force créatrice et destructrice qui est au cœur du roman et qui permet à Blake — presque surhumain — de transformer la réalité, en s’envolant du monde familier et rassurant duquel on fait l’expérience vers un univers plus exotique du rêve et du désir. Or, d’après Ballard, les rêves, les désirs, les états visionnaires sont effectivement le seul moyen à travers lequel s’exprime un absolu transcendantal, inconnu par l’humanité. Cette dernière est en fait enfermée dans un univers temporel et matériel qui tue l’imagination et qui fait de la vie un cauchemar obligeant tout individu à prendre part à la folie schizophrénique du monde contemporain pour pouvoir survivre. L’espace que nous expérimentons dans notre quotidien est donc un espace fermé. Souhaitant affranchir l’homme de ses oppressions, Ballard discrédite le monde convenu. À l’instar des discours tenus par les surréalistes, censés faire tomber les masques de la réalité, ce roman dénonce le caractère illusoire du monde matériel et affirme que l’espace physique que l’on connaît est un simulacre, derrière lequel se cache une surréalité qu’il faut interpréter : c’est avec l’imagination que Blake déploie, tout au long du roman, que l’on peut révéler les discours cachés derrière les icônes de la société. L’espace se configure ainsi comme une étendue ouverte, illimitée, susceptible de s’ajuster à la pensée imaginative de chaque individu.
