Exils de Pascale Casanova

Authors: Jeanpierre, Laurent;

Exils de Pascale Casanova

Abstract

The article offers a reading of Pascale Casanova's work and an account of her singular point of view and personality by following the motif of émigré and exiled writers in The World Republic of Letters. Their works provided a central raw material for the sociology of literature that she intended to found. Two literary possibilities for writer's exiles are identified: the differentiation, within the literary international, of a national tradition, or their integration into the avant-garde pole of world literature. Casanova shows that many writers with transnational trajectories have combined, at different times in their lives, these two strategies. She has replaced the conventional opposition between national and foreign literature with a proposition to discover how writers combine national and cosmopolitan traits. The lessons of the model she proposed go beyond literary and cultural studies and can be useful to all kinds of research on the transnational or the global.
