Abstract

This paper shows that movements that fight for acceding or defending natural resources in Latin America have not only environmental purposes. It takes for study case the Thirteen villages’ movement that appeared in the State of Morelos in Mexico, in 2007, to defend a spring named Chihuahuita against housing development. The paper evidences that the problem was defined as an environmental topic in public arenas in order to gain support to the cause. In fact, in private space, the struggle for Chihuahuita spring is seen as an identitary stake. Peasant communities want to conserve the Chihuahuita spring and the water network it supplies because they support social organization and contribute to the memory reconstruction of the group.
