Abstract

Au sein des organisations, les manières dont un équilibre est recherché entre supérieurs et subordonnés dans les univers anglo-saxon, germanique et français sont nettement différentes. On peut rapprocher ces différences des conceptions de la liberté que l’on trouve chez les penseurs qui, tels Locke, Kant ou Sieyès, ont contribué à l’émergence de la notion moderne de « liberté », désormais comprise comme le premier des droits de l’homme et non un privilège associé à une position sociale. Chacun de ces penseurs reste marqué par la conception de l’homme libre qui prévalait dans son propre univers : dans le monde anglo-saxon, le propriétaire, libre de négocier les conditions de tout engagement dans une action commune; dans le monde germanique, celui qui gère, en commun avec ses pairs, les affaires de la communauté ; en France, le noble qui voit respecter les privilèges liés à son état tout en en acceptant les devoirs. En effet, la frontière symbolique qui sépare, dans ces divers contextes, la figure de l’esclave de celle de l’homme libre sélectionne des éléments différents parmi les traits qui séparaient à l’origine l’esclave réel de l’homme libre réel ; ce n’est pas la même partie qui suffit à représenter métaphoriquement le tout.
