Buchon, l’historien et ses contradictions

Abstract

La trajectoire de Jean-Alexandre Buchon ne correspond pas à celle d’un historien issu du monde de l’érudition savante ; homme de lettres au sens large du terme, Buchon trouve d’abord en Angleterre ses sources d’inspiration, se rapproche ensuite de Victor Cousin, promoteur de la philosophie éclectique. Dans les années 1820, Buchon adhère au courant de l’histoire romantique, fonde une collection de chroniques nationales, pour laquelle il approche les travaux de Charles Du Cange ; à travers ce filtre, il publie trois premiers livres sur la Grèce franque entre 1825 et 1827 ; en 1840, il réédite une partie de ce matériel en ajoutant une synthèse maladroite, qui lui permet néanmoins d’obtenir une mission officielle en Grèce. Les enquêtes de Buchon dans les archives et bibliothèques italiennes, ainsi que le séjour accompli en Grèce en 1840-1841, lui fournissent un abondant matériel qui génère plusieurs articles et ouvrages publiés entre 1843 et 1846. Buchon enrichit ainsi le corpus documentaire, montre d’authentiques talents d’observation durant ses périples dans la province grecque, à la recherche de manuscrits et de monuments. Fidèle à son époque, subissant l’influence de Victor Cousin et d’Augustin Thierry, Buchon développe une théorie très personnelle sur la « Gallo-Grèce », reflet des quêtes de l’époque romantique. Il obtient tardivement une reconnaissance de son travail par les institutions françaises, ayant traversé une période où l’histoire médiévale est en cours de structuration.
