Abstract

Tite-Live raconte que Lucrèce, une belle et modeste matrone romaine, violée par Sextus Tarquin, renonçant à la vie plutôt qu’à l’honneur, s’est poignardée devant ses proches. Sa mort enflamma l’indignation du peuple, déjà très mécontent de la dynastie qui régnait sur Rome, et contribua à la destitution des rois. En fait, il ne s’agit pas d’un meurtre, mais d’un suicide ; cependant, il ne fait aucun doute que l’agresseur de Lucrèce est le premier responsable de sa mort. L’histoire de l’héroïne de Tite-Live connaît une vaste fortune lyrique et tragique dans l’Italie des xviie, xviiie et xixe siècles. Cet essai propose une première analyse, dans une perspective comparative, des différentes déclinaisons avec lesquelles le personnage et les circonstances de la mort de Lucrèce sont traités en vers dans cette période.
