Abstract

Conformément à ses propres dires, on a toujours cru que le chevalier de Jaucourt s’était adressé aux éditeurs de l’ Encyclopédie après la perte du manuscrit complet de son Lexicon Medicum en six volumes, dans un naufrage. Or la découverte d’une annonce dans la Bibliothèque raisonnée , ainsi que d’un Prospectus du Lexicon datant de 1732, permettent de jeter un sérieux doute sur l’existence du manuscrit perdu. Ainsi, on peut montrer qu’il est probable que la publication concurrente d’un Lexicon Medicum Universale en six volumes du médecin allemand Burggrave, dont le tome I parut en 1733, avait mis fin dès cette date au projet de Jaucourt et de son ami Théodore Tronchin, les deux auteurs du projet de Lexicon . Le Prospectus, dont l’unique exemplaire est conservé à Oxford, comprend onze articles dont aucun ne sera repris même par Jaucourt dans l’ Encyclopédie .
