The word renaissance means “rebirth.” In the history of the West, it indicates a period of revival of learning—particularly classical learning, that is, information, ideas, and values associated with the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Carolingian Renaissance refers specifically to the flowering of learning and scholarship during the reign of the Frankish king (and later emperor) Charlemagne, between 768 and 814 CE.
