Czarny, biały, wstyd. Skandal wokół „Exhibit B” Bretta Baileya

Abstract

Brett Bailey’s Exhibit B. The director referred to the phenomenon of ‘human zoos’, i.e. colonial exhibitions which consisted in imitations of Indian and African villages, where half-naked indigenous people were showcased. Despite the fact Bailey explained that his “intention was to raise awareness of systems of racism, objectification and dehumanisation”, the work was considered racist and triggered protests of London’s black community. The article presents both the scandal itself and (by juxtaposing the reactions of white and black audiences in London, Paris and Wroclaw) the paradoxes related to the project, which can be called ‘a war of shames’. Key words: skandal, Exhibit B, wstyd, postkolonializm, cenzura
