Abstract

Le diagnostic archéologique est un acte scientifique qui vise à la détection et à la caractérisation des sites. À Orléans, les premières opérations modernes d’archéologie préventive ont été menées à la fin des années 1970. Au fil des ans, une grande partie des diagnostics n’étant le plus souvent pas suivie de fouille, les équipes orléanaises ont considéré que ce type d'opérations devaient bénéficier d’un montage qualitatif. Porteur d’informations essentielles, le diagnostic archéologique doit être exploité pour trois raisons principales : il s'agit souvent de la seule information disponible sur un sujet spécifique (par ex. vestiges ponctuels et d'emprise limitée, phénomènes plus larges mais difficilement accessibles, éléments linéaires dont tracé difficile à suivre) ; il complète utilement l'information plus détaillée délivrée par la fouille ; il fourni des informations qui constitueront le socle de réflexion de futures interventions (par ex. présence/absence de vestiges, identification, conditions de stratification et de conservation).

Archaeological diagnostic is a scientific act aimed at detecting and characterising sites. In Orléans, the first modern preventive archaeology operations were carried out in the late 1970s. Over the years, as a large part of diagnostics were often not followed by excavation, the Orléans teams considered that this type of operation should be carried out in a qualitative manner. As a source of essential information, the archaeological diagnostic should be used for three main reasons: it is often the only information available on a specific subject (e.g. isolated remains with limited access, wider phenomena that are difficult to access, linear elements that are difficult to follow); it is a useful complement to the more detailed information provided by the excavation; it provides information that will form the basis for future work (e.g. presence/absence of remains, identification, conditions of stratification and conservation).
