Designing Design Systems

Authors: Rui Rodrigo Cabral Pacheco de Melo;

Designing Design Systems

Abstract

EN This work focuses on the ability to build, map and catalyze creativity through design systems where the interrelating capacity of different individuals, tools, and processes are in the context of larger systems or networks of influence. It aims to understand the construction of such systems and the dynamic rearrangement and distribution of spontaneous end-to-end paths once a meaningful change is introduced and consequently propagated through these systems or networks. It will be argued that the fabric of these systems is dynamic and ever-changing, and so is the development roadmap of the teams involved. We can say it's a living product, with an open-ended development framework. Through this text, we'll approach a possible development framework based on a non-linear progression of communication systems aiming to produce and provide guidelines to individuals and teams from different disciplines and cultures toward an optimal production process. Also, we'll look with some detail at the operational aspects of the expected output of contributions and ultimately the outcome of such methodologies, first; on the end user that will use the product and services that are fundamentally and technologically impacted by such frameworks; second, the contributors and teams of contributors who build and use the systems to produce their work which also is impacted by the implementation and execution of such methodologies. An analysis of the creative impact at the individual level of the contributor should be expected in the context of such systems, the role of the designer in injecting new creative value through such networks of individuals and methodologies, and the consequences that these continuous feedback loops have at evolving and scaling these systems. The concept of a system in these creative environments should be understood and the notion of metadesign applied to the architecture(s) and interdependence(s) of these development environments. At a low level, we should understand what a design system is and what its origins are, as well as predict and propose points of evolution having possible starting points like e.g. atomic design and systems thinking. Questioning and expanding the concept of what a design system is, should be understood as the main contribution to this dissertation. To this end, we will also look, briefly, at what design systems have been in recent decades.

EN Facing a society increasingly supported and interconnected by technology, the importance of systematization and optimization becomes evident, as well as the growing challenge that is implicit in these practices at various levels for professionals in Design and ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is therefore essential to question and redesign platforms for construction and collaboration across multiple disciplines, which, in orchestration, aim to evolve and make the positive impact of technology more meaningful in the fabric and foundations of this information society.
