Construir uma Casa é uma Aventura

Authors: Sofia Cristino Batista Gonçalves;

Construir uma Casa é uma Aventura

Abstract

The scope of this essay is the design of a weekend dwelling-house facing the sea. This condition caused, since the very moment of the order, several queries and hesitations regarding a method of conceiving 'one house', which configured a work field that exceeds the architectural design and, above all, leads to deal with dwelling patterns. The task includes that group of initial con-cerns which, together with other arguments, philosophical thoughts and other images, shapes and/or ideas of home, gave rise to a theoretical reflection about houses for seasonal sojourn. I hereunder refer to house through an association of diversified questions which end by configur-ing the universe where contemporary domestic architecture moves. Some of these themes are directly linked to house, since they are but reflections made by way of house and the problems house faces nowadays. Other themes, however, although being not new, require further analysis, because either they are still truly actual or rouse doubts and inaccuracies. The distance between the concepts house and home, or house and dwelling, illustrate such dilemma. Media constantly cast a heterogeneous amount of images and information which I tried to perceive and understand more attentively. Thus, I propose an open/indirect type of investigation that does neither pro-gress through the history of house, nor its typological ranking, nor the masterpieces of domestic architecture, though they may appear here and there. I grant priority to procedures and projects focused on location and utilisation, on shapes and relationship with landscape, instead of ques-tions associated to materiality or construction. This choice doesn't mean any lack of interest for such themes; on the contrary, it is only due to the time limitation that conditions this work. This heterogeneous complex of subjects ends by determining the text structure. The structure may seem a little disorderly at first sight, but it's a reflex of the diversity and complexity of the mat-ters collected and their provenance, and is accomplished in accordance with that order. This theoretical scenery, translated into an equation, anticipates the building of the house through words and drawings. I am sure the bundle of reflections and study cases/houses point to a con-cept of house - maybe more related to the phenomenal, daily sensorial experiences than towards an idea of house as a laboratory: experimental and/or an invention. The essay is about the pre-sketch of this house; the process, of mental building.
