Melodic Lection Marks in Latin Manuscripts for Mass

Abstract

Entre les lignes des textes de plusieurs lectionnaires, se trouvent des signes similaires aux neumes qui sont souvent ignorés. Ces signes mélodiques de lecture fonctionnent avec la ponctuation pour aider les lecteurs à déterminer où et comment aborder les cadences mélodiques qui signalent les fins de phrases. En s’appuyant sur les manuscrits d’exemplar dominicains d’environ 1260 — les plus vieilles sources comprenant ces signes ainsi que la notation sur portée montrant comment conclure différents types de phrases— cet article indique dans un premier temps la fonction de chaque signe, révélant ainsi comment leur emploi est lié à la lecture des leçons de Messe. Basé sur une étude de plus de soixante manuscrits utilisés pour la lection publique, cet article suit, dans un second temps, l’émergence de ces signes du Haut Moyen Âge et étudie leur systématisation dans les livres cisterciens, dominicains et d’Usage de Sarum.
