Abstract

Le docteur Max Vauthey et Paul Vauthey ont démontré que « la base de travail la plus solide », pour comprendre les grands courants commerciaux de la Gaule romaine, était l'étude des estampilles et des marques de potiers. Ce sont, précisent ces mêmes auteurs, des « fossiles directeurs » utilisables pour déterminer des courants commerciaux. Cette étude de la Terra Sigillata découverte sur le site de Juliomagus se heurte à des problèmes de sources et d'attribution d'ateliers. En effet, peu de tessons ont été relevés en stratigraphie, et la localisation topographique reste même bien souvent approximative. De plus, il est très difficile d'attribuer l'exclusivité de la céramique d'un potier à une seule officine du sud, du centre ou de l'est de la Gaule, car non seulement les artisans se déplaçaient, mais encore ils étaient abondamment copiés.
