Apollon meurtrier en Étrurie

Abstract

La cruauté dont certains auteurs antiques comme Aristote taxent les Étrusques paraît exagérée. À notre connaissance, les Étrusques ne se sont pas spécialisés dans un type de torture particulier consistant à attacher face à face un prisonnier mort à un autre vivant. En revanche, il est arrivé qu’ils procèdent à des sacrifices sanglants de prisonniers de guerre. Trois cas, au moins, sont connus, où les Étrusques ont peut-être cherché à tuer un nombre de prisonniers de guerre ennemis correspondant à la quantité des Étrusques morts au combat dont ils voulaient obtenir l’immortalité. Selon un principe d’équivalence numérique, le nombre d’âmes offertes aux dieux permettait de racheter celles perdues au combat. Un dieu en particulier, Apollon, appelé Suri en Étrurie tyrrhénienne, Vedius en Étrurie padane, pourrait avoir été à la fois le destinataire de ces sacrifices et l’agent de cette immortalisation.
