The considerable stir caused by Masson de Morvilliers' article about « Espagne », published in Panckoucke's Encyclopédie méthodique, is well-known. Surprisingly, the image of Spain in Diderot 's and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie has not been addressed yet. The present study seeks to fill this lacuna, at least partly so, by focusing on the authors of the articles (foremostly Jaucourt), on the sources they drew from, and on the way they tackled the various topics they were dealing with.
