Poesía didáctica y ciencia experimental en la Ilustración española

Abstract

Aunque siguiendo pautas y gustos acomodados en Francia, es en la época de Carlos III cuando surge en España una poesía de exaltación a las ciencias, a los nuevos descubrimientos y adelantos, de genuina esencia ilustrada. Poesía destinada a una minoría de iniciados que sabe apreciar el esfuerzo intelectual del autor, cuyo « arte » reside en transmitir conocimientos en el atractivo envoltorio de estrofas, versos y rimas en renovado acatamiento de la poética horaciana. El afán de enseñar es el principal resorte que impulsa a López de Ayala a componer Termas de Archena (1777), lo mismo que al abate Viera y Clavijo, quien con guasón humor traslada a octavas en Los aires fijos (1780) lo que ha aprendido en París (y luego en Viena) sobre física y química experimentales. Incluso en fechas muy tardías, Gabriel Ciscar perfila en un largo Poema físico-astronómico (1828) su testamento intelectual con crédula fe - desde los sinsabores del exilio - en la « sublimidad y utilidad » de tales ciencias.
